COMMON GROUND
AT EDE PROJECTS
POLLY BENNETT | MARGARET DEVITT | PHILIPPA FUTRELL | LORRAINE SINGER
CURATED BY ELOISE DETHIER-EATON
‘Common Ground’ is about the ground, the earth, the soil that makes up the local landscape inhabited by all of the artists in this exhibition. Again and again, this environment proves to be fertile terrain as they reimagine the tradition of landscape painting or incorporate the soil directly into their composition in the form of pigment or clay, thus turning the material itself into the primary subject of their work. Whilst each artist and maker has their own unique style, focus and approach to making, this exhibition seeks to navigate the shared territories they explore.
This series of exhibitions brings together artists and makers participating in South East Open Studios. SEOS is an event that takes place every year in the South East of England, across Kent and Sussex, whereby creatives open their studios or workshops to the public in June. As SEOS celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, these exhibitions at EDE Projects are, in turn, a celebration of the creative community that is at the heart of this region.
EDE Projects is a hybrid art studio, gallery and project space in Rye, East Sussex. It was founded by artist and curator Eloise Dethier-Eaton to run creative workshops, to exhibit her own work and to curate solo and groups shows with artists from Rye and beyond whose work she admires.
