MEET ME HALFWAY
AT THE MILE END ART PAVILION
Meet Me Halfway is a group show presenting a selection of work by MA Fine Art students from City & Guilds of London Art School. Halfway through their two-year part-time course at the school, this is an occasion for eleven emerging artists to come together and share a glimpse of their practice as it unfolds. The exhibition title also references the spirit of dialogue and collaboration on the course, which is key to testing ideas and providing new perspectives on each other’s practices. Meet Me Halfway is composed of both figurative and abstract work in a range of media: work on paper, painting, installation and sculpture.
Exhibiting artists are Cass Breen, Eloise Dethier-Eaton, Camilla Dilshat, Munisha Gupta, Andy Grinham, Louise Hardy, Charly Helyar, Sarah Hills, Jennifer Hodgson, Georgie Mason and Sally Weatherill.
In ‘Riches to Rags’, Eloise Dethier-Eaton turns her attention towards clothes and fabrics. These works on paper portray stacked up bales of clothing, directly inspired by snapshots of the clothing amassed in material recycling centres. In addition to its aesthetic quality, the subject raises inherent questions of value and perspective. Eloise addresses the harmful impacts of fast fashion, but also hopes to counter this notion of immeasurable waste by encouraging consideration of the potential that material goods can offer when reused and recycled. Depicted in much detail, these paintings require a lot of time to make, and therefore solicit a slower reading from viewers as they are invited to contemplate the stories behind the objects at hand.
